Chilean Copper Mine Collapse Essay August 5 at the San Esteban mine, near the city of Copiapo, Chile 34 miners have been missing and presumed trapped after a collapse of the main shaft. At this time it is uncertain of the extent of injuries after the collapse. The Minera San Estaban Primera company; owners of the San Esteban mine have stated mining accidents on a major scale are uncommon in Chile and hopes are high that all the 34 workers made it to the refuge area where supplies are located. Rescuers are underway in hopes of locating all 34 workers alive. The primary method for rescue is drilling holes in an attempt to locate the workers. There are concerns about the amount of oxygen at this depth approximately 100 meters below the surface. With a drilled hole into the shaft where miners are believed to be; needed supplies may be delivered until a full rescue can be attempted. I believe a report more in line with what I wrote about would have been a far more positive way of delivering a hard message to concerned family members, coworkers at the mine, and all humans with concern for these miners. In our text a quote was found from Ralph Nichols. The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them. † If the owners of the mining company had listened to the concerns of the family members a more positive method of communicating the situation and tactics that may be utilized to save these workers. If the San Jose mine owners had attempted to use a central idea and main points while informing the media of their intentions many of the angry family members who received little or no information would not have been as quick to call for safety records. The use of visual support to quickly let the audience know that the company and rescue team was at least working on plan would have been very helpful in easing the minds of the audience. Early in the incident the company gave almost no information to the media or family. A crude outline of the events would have been an improvement in the communication process over the lack of communication displayed early on. A plan of action displayed for the world to see has great value here. Had the company used the fact form of persuasion to deliver a message to concerned audience members many of the family members may have been put at ease somewhat. Had the company stated that Chile had very few major mining incidents in its history this could have went very far to improve the relationship with the media and concerned onlookers. Explaining that supplies would be provided for the duration of this event and these workers would not be abandoned even if it was implied would have been very valuable. The use of value in this communication process letting everyone know that the miners were indeed valued by this company and all that could be done would be done surely would have been a positive and assisted all parties involved. Obviously to discuss policy and or procedures for mine collapse would have persuaded the audience of the company’s determination to do the right thing. This also eases the audiences mind that the company has plans in place prior to an incident. The company did not do any of these things early in the emergency. If the company could have simply stated their intentions to fix this problem and improve operations in the future many of their mistakes could have been forgiven. It may not have been possible early on to discuss the intentions to keep the mine open, if it could have this would have reinforced to everyone that the company would be here throughout the incident and beyond. As many of us know the incident took 70 days to complete and the miners were delivered supplies through a small tube for the duration. Although this story has a heroic and happy outcome; the first few days of the incident was hell for onlookers. Watching video from the incident probably would indicate a need for better nonverbal communications by the mine owners. Neither nonverbal communication, semantics, nor syntax would have changed the family’s grief in the beginning nearly as much as the lack of communication did affect them negatively.

Humans in general are not peaceful in nature, we have always been violent and we shouldn’t try to change our nature as drastically as we have done. There are going to be side effects that we aren’t aware of if we try to remove this important part of our nature. Humans need some form of violence to help cope with stress and the everyday hassles we have created for ourselves. Now with new technology and faster computers we no longer need to injure someone to get that needed amount of violence. Simulated violence is a more humane way of dealing with such problems. Groups of people should partake in sessions of simulated violence to get the dosage of violence they need. When I speak of simulated violence I speak of video games and more specifically multi-player video games. A single-player video game is one where a single person is engaged against the computer. This form of play can help relive stress but not nearly as much as a multi-player game. A multi-player game is one where at least 2 people are playing against each other. Multi-player games highly satisfy the need for violence because it becomes easy to show aggression against someone with injury or personal harm. I have been a player of these games since I was younger and I have participated in many multi-player games. The games I have been evolved in mostly had at least 3 players and are generally at night and during the weekend. The Principle of Charity in Critical Thinking

The Principle of Charity is an important critical thinking method wherein a person is expected to become â€Å"charitable† toward the position and arguments that he or she opposes, which means that a person must give opposing views and arguments fair and honest interpretation. This principle does not imply that one should agree with an opposing view but rather a person should apply a wide discretion in interpreting contradicting or opposing statements. Contradicting statements may, by all means, be subject to all forms of scrutiny and criticism. In comparison, one can say that the purest of gold shines only through the fire (Waller, 2008). A person must fully understand the principle of charity when coming to terms with other people’s views. Several principles may be applied as guides to understanding the principle of charity. When the pieces of evidence allow a person to attribute him to a stronger argument, one should not point him to a weaker argument. One also must not interpret a statement as a bad argument when an ordinary prudent may reasonably interpret is as not an argument at all (McGraw Hill, 2006, p. 38-43). The importance of this principle can be greatly appreciated in conjunction with the Strawman fallacy which happens when a person twists an idea or distorts a statement to make it more vulnerable to attack. The application of the principle of charity is the best way to avoid this policy because it always represents arguments and views in their strongest and most credible form (Waller, 2008). This principle is important because it enables a person to inspect fully and consider all the aspects of an argument before making another statement or conclusion. There is great challenge in the application of this principle because in doing so, the mind opens itself to a world of creative thinking thereby allowing a free-falling and continuous cycle of arguments.

Ocean Eiler

Ocean Eiler is a designer from PBS KIDS. Actually, he is far more than a designer because he is good at a lot of things. As a Senior Designer at PBS KIDS, he has molded his title to UX design, web design, frontend development, Flash development, video editing, audio FX creation, soundscape mixing, print design, game development, mobile development and a touch of management. Besides, he is also an artist, a DJ, a skateboarder, and a rock climber. He was graduated from Ohio University with double degrees.After graduation, Ocean got his first job in Switzerland. He then returned the United States and has worked for WOUB, Pixel & Ink, Matrix Group, and finally PBS KIDS. The lecture was mainly about the designing process of the PBS KIDS GO! Eiler introduced how did the idea come up and how was the website finally realized. Through the lecture, I learnt more about the process of designing a website on desktop, including sketches, wireframes, color choices, and user testing, which is a very important part of operating an effective and attractive website.Besides, I also learnt that websites could be built with both front and back end simultaneously under tight deadlines. The PBS KIDS GO! was accomplished and put up online only in 12 days, whereas Eiler told me that a huge website project usually take 6 months till a whole year. After the lecture, I am more aware of the significance of HTML and CSS. Since I am applying for summer interns recently, I found that most companies require coding skills. Proficiency of Photoshop and Illustrator nowadays is the lowest requirement, yet coding is dominating in the future.There are a large amount of coding opportunities online await. I really have to develop my coding skills as soon as possible. During the lecture, Eiler mentioned â€Å"Big paper, big ideas†, which was said by Chris Bishop, the boss of Eiler’s. Eiler also showed us his working process of the PBS KIDS GO! on paper from sketches to final version. Howev er, I could not agree with him on this point because the â€Å"big paper† idea is not suitable for all websites, especially for the mobile web.As I saw Eiler’s work on large sheets of paper, the â€Å"big paper† idea is really great for desktop web, whereas nowadays, mobile web is more important than desktop web and is dominating in the future. Recently, I read an article on designshack. net, which was discussing whether to go mobile web first or the desktop while designing a website. The author finally concluded that designers should go mobile first not only due to the rapid increase of mobile users, but also because â€Å"progressively enhancing† the website from mobile devices to desktops will make the website both functional and beautiful.The author of the article called going desktop first â€Å"graceful degradation† and going mobile first â€Å"progressive enhancement†. Comparing the article’s viewpoint with Eiler’s sugge stion during the lecture, I thought they were both right. Eiler showed us some data at the beginning of the lecture, which shows that 98% PBS KIDS users are desktop web users and around half of them use Internet Explorer. Besides, the users’ major screen resolution is 1024Ãâ€"768.The data is so different from the investment of a larger range of web users, which shows that Google Chrome is occupying the major browser market and mobile users are far more than 2%. Therefore, my opinion is that kids are using outdated desk/laptops (may be substituted by their parents) more often, and hence, they do not really need mobile web. For websites on desktop, the â€Å"big paper† idea is effective and helpful because it contains more details and possibilities. Whereas considering a wider range web user, going mobile first seems more important and necessary.Even Google has just announced that their future websites are going mobile first. Currently, smartphones are playing critical roles in people’s daily lives. People can get information more quickly and effectively through mobile web. Base on the increasing rate of mobile web users, mobile web will definitely change the structure of the Internet even computer companies. Designing a website on mobile devices more emphasizes on function and â€Å"big paper† idea will not be suitable for a small screen. Overall, the PBS KIDS GO! as a great palette, it is so active but not messing with the colorful content. It also balances the relationship between tidiness and excitement. The outgoing design is really attractive for kids. Although the grid design feels a little redundant for me, it is direct and convenient for children. The only thing I concerned was when I tested the website through both dolphin and chrome browsers on my cell phone, the grid did not slide smoothly. But since the mobile users are so few, it does not affect the user experience generally.
